How to Install Tape in Hair Extensions

Installing tape in hair extensions may be easier than you think! We always advise customers to speak with a professional hairstylist on whether tape in hair extensions are suitable for them. We suggest having them installed by a professional hairdresser for proper application and maintenance. Here are some tips below that may help you with your choice.

First part: Preparation

  1. What is the density of your hair? Usually, tape in extensions are better suited to individuals with low or medium density hair.
  2. If you are unsure of your hair density, here are two quick tests to determine this.
    • Tie your hair back in a ponytail and measure the circumference of the hair band. If it is less than two inches, you likely have low-density hair, and if it is more than four inches, your hair is on the denser side.
    • In a mirror, check to see if you can see your scalp. If your hair has a lower density, your scalp should be more visible. If your hair has a higher density, your scalp will be very hard to see.
  1. What kind of look are you going for?
    • For a full head of hair/voluminous look, we recommend 200 g.
    • For half-a-head/to add a little more volume, we recommend 100 g.
    • If you are going for a very full look, we would recommend 200 g plus.
    • If you are going for lengths longer than 20 inches, we would highly advise getting 200 g. With longer single drawn lengths over 20 inches, the hair tends to look thinner on the bottom. Or we suggest you upgrade to double drawn hair.
    • For highlights, we would recommend 50 g.

Second part: Installation

If you are a visual learner, you will love this! Check out our video below of one of our models installing the hair extensions. Also, the following step-by-step guide may come in handy to you.

  1. Wash your hair and ensure that you only apply conditioner to the mid shafts of your hair, and not to the roots.
  2. Start sectioning off your leave-out around the perimeter of your hair.
  3. Apply the tapes, starting from the bottom of the hair. Begin your first row 1-2 inches from the bottom of your scalp. It is useful to have hair clips to keep your hair out of the way.
  4. In order to apply your first tapes, part a small section of hair.
  5. Remove the plastic on the tape and apply the first sandwich to the bottom of the hair about ¼ inch away from the scalp. Then apply the second sandwich to the top of the hair. Hold the tapes firmly for roughly 20 seconds.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 throughout, working in small sections, all the way to the top of your hair.
